Just prior to my 42nd Birthday I took up a hobby (pole fitness) while I was on a sabbatical, that close friends call "midlife crisis".

Mine, however, didn’t turn into a new car, but new ‘car’eer.

See, the thing is, I have a geeky science education, worked as a self-employed/entrepreneur in the finance industry for 17 years, have never been overly fit, or involved in any physical sports. Wife and Mother of two wonderful daughters, I’m certainly not the type of person you’d expect to find in the Sisterhood, and yet I am sooo typical. I’m one of the few that get such an adrenaline rush from being in a studio and around other polers that I even put up with my vertigo while I had to learn spins! People call me strong, but I look at all the great pole artists, aerial artists and I can only find fault in my imperfections and strive for more greatness. But I willingly admit to a strength of character to go after something I’m passionate about and try and make the world a better place by enthusiastically and genuinely trying to share it with others, so they can also experience or feel that same powerful connection to achievement, accomplishment, to unleashing and reconnecting with your sexy strong self. I am Loving every minute of this challenge.

Jocie - Founder/Mentor

I was dragged to my first pole dance class by my curious mother over 8 years ago. I had many negative preconceived notions about what we were in for and went solely for support. I was over weight after the birth of my second child and 'sexy' was never a word I would have ever used to describe how I felt about myself. That one class changed everything. It awoke something deep within me, some kind of connection with a sensuality that I had no idea existed. I nearly became unhinged with glee when I attempted my first spin on the pole with lack-luster success. It is with the same connection and enthusiasm that I teach my classes. Watching a transformation in my students is my greatest joy. To see them connect with their bodies, watch their strength and confidence grow, it reminds me of my first class and the discovery that we all have an little dancer inside of us that is just itching to get out!

I’m a fun-loving, easy going person who loves to dance, spend time with my family and friends and just have a good time. I’m the mother of one handsome little man who is my most favourite thing in the whole world. Most importantly, I love what Brass Belles has done for me in the past 3 years and that is, helping me embrace and love the body I have – curves and all – and I love having the opportunity to share that experience with the amazing women I meet in my classes.

Christine

In 2009 I took my first class at Brass Belles.
I’m a little shy and had never been comfortable with overt sexiness, which is why I decided to first join a drop-in class to get a feel for the studio.  After attending several of the drop-in classes I became more intrigued by the pole and finally built up the courage to join a beginner pole class.
I have a dance background but had never tried anything like this before.   It was the moment that I successfully completed my backwards spin that I fell in love.  What was once a casual hobby quickly became an obsession consuming most of my free evenings.   I fell in love with the girls, my instructors, and the challenges of each new move.   I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful women and have formed many new friendships.  Pole dancing has helped me to build strength and lead a more active life style.

Melanie

As a kid I used to love gymnastics but due to a knee disorder I had to quit doing it at a very young age. In 2013 a friend told me about a workshop being held at a Pole Studio downtown and invited me to join her. As soon as I took my first class I fell in love with pole dancing and couldn’t wait to continue doing it. At first I felt very silly and shy doing all the different moves but as I continued on my pole journey I gained more confidence in my abilities, more comfortable with all the different moves and have fallen in love with the sport more than I could have ever imagined. Although I don’t think I am any “sexier” than the day I took my first class I still enjoy every class, whether it be teaching and watching new students on their own pole journeys or being a student myself and becoming stronger as a pole dancer. For me Pole Dancing is my way to go back and do something I loved as a child, it’s my adult gymnastics!

Libby

Libby has been dancing for more than a decade, and pole dancing for over 5 years. She's a professional performer and pole competitor, loves to teach, and has discovered a growing passion for choreography, both on and off the pole. Libby recently won first place in the Pole Art category at the 2016 Canadian National Pole Championships.

Adele

I love trying new things and challenging myself! It’s who I am. For the past 15 years, I have been a full-time Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. Personally, I have tried many amazing things over the years from Triathlons, Running Races, Fitness Competitions, and much more. I love the journey of self-discovery. Fitness is my passion and my daily drive. I love setting personal goals and working hard to achieve and even surpass these objectives.

I believe that everyone should try something new yearly and find the beauty in the art of movement. Your health and happiness should always be your number one priority. Pole Dancing was a new adventure for me. I never took dance as a child and had no idea what I was getting into but I was up for a new game and challenge. I needed a break from the norm of working out in a typical gym and I loved how graceful people looked dancing as well as the sensual aspect of it all. After all, I have two growing boys and as a woman I needed to feel sexy once in a while! After I tried my first class - I fell in love! I am enjoying my journey with Brass Belles and you will too!

Melanie Irene

Melanie started pole dancing in 2007 when she was looking to add some creativity and excitement into her grad-student life. With a strong background in dance and fitness, pole dancing seemed like a great way to combine the two into a fun and effective workout. Much like everyone else, she was instantly hooked. Melanie began teaching pole in 2009 and has taught and created a variety of classes and workshops including choreography, conditioning, flexibility, tricks and competition training. She is currently a certified pole fitness instructor (PFIC & Aradia), has a PhD in Kinesiology, and has past experience personal training as a CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist®. Teaching has given her an avenue to combine her passions for pole and kinesiology to provide safe and effective training for all of her pole students.

Gabriela Moreno Ruiz

My name is Gabriela Moreno Ruiz and I'm a proud Mexican. Born with a dancer’s heart and manifested that to my life, I started dancing at age 4, which thrilled my mom, the perfect activity for her "tomboy".

After years of bouncing from ballet to jazz, to tap, to gymnastics (short lived ~ as I was too tall!), to cheerleading, I found one of my passions; bellydancing. I started bellydancing at 16, and I was a big fan of Shakira. Bellydance brought me such joy, made me body proud and I found a beautiful community that encouraged me to become better. When I moved to Canada I was looking for a big change of life, wasn’t dancing anymore, was tired of being a lawyer and having to run my business, I was missing something. It took me 3 years, and starting pole dancing to realize just what I needed. I was early 30’s and upset and tired, with not many choices for adult FUN fitness, I chose to call up the local pole studio. I was so excited and nervous because the then “Miss Pole Canada” was the studio Owner. Shanyn Pollard turned out welcoming and asked me to join one open pole class so I could see if it was what I was looking for. I can remember going in, fully clothed, so just my hands and face could be seen. Now very self-aware of myself I enter to this beautiful place where everyone was super welcoming... the girls in the studio where all having fun and doing crazy tricks. And I received support, comfort and love, from the other students, Instructors and now friends. I immediately fall in love with this sport. The following years have been amazing -finding best friends - pole sisters -- feeling encouraged -- beautiful. I have found so much body confidence to the point of now helping others to achieve those things also. Pole has opened my eyes to wonderful styles of teaching and fitness like never before and I intend to keep it in my life until I die from old age... literally ?

In my "spare time" I do have a career in interior design which I love to practice, too.

Erika

Pole Dancing? I had never heard of it until one day Jocie’s mother invited me over to watch a video. She was very excited! Apparently I did not show sufficient enthusiasm at the time as a year and a half went by before she brought it up again and invited me to attend Jocie’s first pole class. Of course I went along to be supportive…and never left.

The physical and mental challenges as well as the encouraging and fun environment are the perfect escape.

Joining the studio and trying out all of the fantastic classes they had to offer was my springboard to try my hand at a variety of other awesome activities including aerial silks, static trapeze, chinese poles, hand balancing, aerial straps, lyra as well as a variety of conditioning and flexibility approaches. In the past few years I have taken up pole silks and have the time of my life competing as a member of the Trinity Trixters.

I am enjoying the opportunity to “pay it forward” and pass on some of the things I have learned over the years. Age is a state of mind. If you don’t stop, you’ll probably go on forever.

Cass

In 2013 I was tired of the same gym workout routines. Looking for something new and outside of my comfort zone, I signed up for my first pole dance class. It was love at first spin! I admit, it was hard for someone who is generally shy and to herself to walk into a class full of strangers; but the welcoming energy of the studio made me feel like it was somewhere I had been for years. I couldn't wait to take my next class, and quickly began spending most of my spare time either in a class or on my pole at home. My pole journey so far has not only given me strength, but has given me a sense of self  confidence I didn't have before.

Melanie Walkem

Melanie began her pole journey in 2010, after driving by the studio multiple times she finally convinced herself to give it a try. She instantly fell in love, and started attending classes at Brass Belles regularly. Melanie has an extensive background in classical dance she started training at the age of 3, and was competing by the age of 8. Her knowledge of dance translated perfectly as she slowly discovered her inner pole dancer (which took a bit of getting used to). Melanie's love of movement and dance helped her choose a career as a Registered Massage Therapist. This has given her a better understanding of muscle movement and injury prevention. As much as Melanie loves teaching and helping her students grow, she also loves being a student herself, and has made life long friends at the studio.

Emily

As a child, I was very involved in sports, however after a knee injury I became very limited to those activities. After taking a break, I returned to the sporting world by playing on a recreational co-ed soccer team, it never really felt like enough. In 2015, my soccer team decided to take a season off and I began to look for something new to try, thus how I ended up at Brass Belles!

That, was one of the best decision I’ve ever made for myself, because Brass Belles has changed my life. I’ve never experienced such a strong, supportive, confident group of loving women, and from day one, I felt like I was at home. This community has allowed me to be me, and proud of it! The pole and fitness classes that are offered at Brass Belles have not only allowed me to physically become stronger, but has also allowed my mental well-being and happiness shine bright like a diamond. I have discovered a part of me that I never thought I would, and each and every time I come to Belles, wither it is to teach, or to take a class, adds another page, to not only my pole journey, but my journey in life.
